Grants

Federal, state and university grants are available to help cover your costs of obtaining a higher education. These grants are offered on the basis of financial need, so not all students will qualify. If you are offered a grant, it is considered gift aid. In other words, you do not need to repay a grant as you would a student loan. Below is a list of the grants offered to eligible students at Texas State.

Undergraduate Grants

Federal Pell Grant

The federal *Pell Grant is offered to students based on significant financial need. For 2023-2024, the maximum award is expected to be $7,395. Students who have received a bachelor's degree or are in a graduate program are not eligible for a Pell Grant. If during the term you receive a bachelor's degree or enroll in a graduate program, you will no longer be eligible for a Pell Grant.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)

Students who have received a bachelor’s degree or are in a graduate program are not eligible for this grant. If during the term you receive a bachelor’s degree or enroll in a graduate program, please contact us as you will no longer be eligible for the SEOG. Important: This grant is contingent upon the availability of federal funds and will be cancelled or reduced in the event federal funds are no longer available.

TEACH Grant

If you choose to participate in this program, you must agree to serve as a full-time teacher in a high-need field in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves low-income students.

If you fail to meet the requirements of the service obligation, the TEACH Grant will convert to a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan. You will then be required to repay the loan to the U.S. Department of Education. You will also be charged interest from the date the grant was disbursed.

You may review more information about the obligations at studentaid.gov.

If you are a TEACH Grant recipient, federal regulations require you to have begun attending the courses for which you are enrolled and receiving this grant. If on the census class day roster (e.g., 12th day of each fall and spring semester) you are reflected as not attending a course, you are assumed not to have begun attendance for that course. As a result, your grant will then be adjusted or cancelled based on the courses you have actually begun attending.

If you fail to begin attendance in all of the courses for which you are registered, you will have failed to establish eligibility for financial aid. In this situation, you will be required to repay all of the financial aid that you have received.
